TinyURL IE8 Accelerator

Accelerators in Internet Explorer 8 are a great new feature, or will be if they become widely adopted.

So far they’re limited to a few Microsoft defaults and a couple others from Google, Wikipedia and Dictionary.com.

Silverlight programmer Tim decided to create an accelerator for TinyURL, which was something I was actually wishing for only a couple days ago:

Well, now that IE8 Beta 2 is out, I decided (well, my selfishness decided) that I should create an activity accelerator for something that I use often so I introduce you to: IE8 Accelerator for TinyURL. So with a little XML, it was done. Seriously, like < 5 minutes.

Basically you can select (highlight) text that is a URL and right-click (or choose the accelerator icon in IE8) then choose the “Shrink URL” option (I’m taking votes if this should be “TinyURL-ify” instead). This will take your selection (or selected hyperlink) and send it to TinyURL. A simple, but hopefully useful accelerator for you to use. Here’s a little video demonstration:

Thanks for the tip on this one (it's always good to find useful Accelerators). I think Activities for Firefox deserve a mention here - it's an add-on that enables Accelerators for Firefox and Flock, and it was created and released just hours after IE8 Beta 1.

Hah... that sure is suprising =P

It's actually good though, if it only worked in IE then less people would bother creating them... if it works for FF, Flock and IE then might get some good ones appearing.

Actually, the best implementation of mouse-search I have found is Kallout

Works over Firefox AND IE AND Office. Plus, little mentioned but the BestGuesser is superior to endless nested Accelerator menus. You basically highlite an address and it knows it's an address. Highlite a movie star and you're watching the Youtube video.

Can't say when it was released but I got it last month.
